Ep.15: Are Closed Captions Dumbing Us Down?
Have you noticed of late how many of us are using closed captions and subtitles? I’m right there with you. But are we aware of the effect this may have on our connection with others?
Closed captions can be great when learning new languages, or if we’re hearing challenged, and even for those of us that might need some help staying focused, but for the mainstream, are we aware of the conditioning that closed captioning might be doing to our brains.
When we’re conditioned to have our focus majority of the time on the text, it can become easy to disconnect from the person speaking. We no longer pay attention to their expressions and micro facial (and bodily) nuances. We miss the collective impact of the words because they are not matched to the facial and body expressions given.
Maybe consider turning off the CC next time to give your brain some training. With the enormous decrease in our sensory acuity since the rise of technology, the last thing we need is less connection and understanding of our fellow humans.
Remember, USE it or LOSE it! 🙈
